TORRE GUACETO
AND MACCHIA SAN GIOVANNI
(Site of Community Importance)
Close to the natural
reserve of Torre Guaceto, in the territories partly
belonging to Brindisi and partly to Carovigno, there
is the area known as “Iazzo San Giovanni”,
where there is the interesting presence of tree specimens
of Mastic (Pistacia lentiscus) and Phillyrea
(Phillyrea latifoglia).
The wet area of international
interest includes swamps located along the coast line,
characterized by Phragmites (Phragmites australis),
Juncus (Juncus maritimus) and Great Fen Sedge
(Cladium mariscus), good habitat for stops
and reproduction of migrating seabirds.
The area, with dunes and Mediterranean Maquis behind,
has a great value from the landscape and vegetation
point of view, with a coast profile rich of small bays.
The rocky ground layer is calcareous.
The area has a great
archaeological interest as well.
